2023 ICFJ/ONE Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling

Suitably qualified English-speaking journalists working in Africa for print, broadcast, and online news media who have no more than 10 years of journalism experience are invited to submit an application for the 2023 ICFJ/ONE Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling worth US$5,000 reporting grant & Internship at the Economist’s HQ in the UK.

The Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling is funded by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the ONE Campaign, and the Elliott family to award upcoming journalists in Africa who are committed to strengthening the people’s voices and shedding light on the transformational change taking place on the African continent. Eligible entries must represent groundbreaking journalistic work published between December 1, 2021, and December 1, 2022, as winners will be selected based on the quality of their work and the impact their work has had on the African communities. Bear in mind that entries will be judged by a distinguished international jury including media leaders from various parts of the world like the US, UK, and Africa.

The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) is a non-profit, professional organization located in Washington, D.C., United States, that promotes journalism all over the globe since its establishment in 1984, the organization has worked directly with over 70,000 journalists from about 180 countries over the last 27 years and continues to offers hands-on training, workshops, seminars, fellowships and international exchanges to reporters and media managers around the globe.

Eligibility for the 2023 ICFJ/ONE Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling:

  • Applicants must be English-speaking journalists working in Africa for print, broadcast, and online news media.
  • Applicants must have no more than 10 years of experience in journalism.
  • Applicants must submit one published piece that exemplifies Africa through thoughtful reporting and excellent storytelling.
  • Applicants’ entry must be a copy of the published story or broadcast clip in English.
  • The applicant’s entry must be published between December 1, 2021, and December 1, 2022.

Benefits of the 2023 ICFJ/ONE Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling:

  • A cash prize worth $5,000 and a personalized crystal award.
  • Winners will have the chance to spend about two weeks at the Economist headquarters in London or to complete a tailored study tour of US newsrooms.
