Suitably Qualified African Students are invited to submit applications for the PEP/GEAI Africa Fellows 2023 in Education Program and stand an opportunity to receive a $35,000 grant. GEAI and PEP are seeking young African researchers passionate about educational improvement who could benefit from extra support to apply to the Africa Fellows in Education Program.

The Yidan Prize is providing support for the Global Education Analytics Institute (GEAI) and The Africa Fellows in Education Program (AFE), which enables fellows to take part in a two-year research and policy development fellowship. This fellowship gives them the opportunity to gain experience in research and analysis and to become part of a global network of researchers and policy advisors.

Value of Award for the PEP/GEAI Africa Fellows 2023 in Education Program for African Students:

The Program will provide a $35,000 research grant in cash, and will also cover expenses, valued at up to $25,000, for activities such as mentorship, study visits, conference travel, and in-country workshops for the purpose of sharing research findings and training.

Eligibility for the PEP/GEAI Africa Fellows 2023 in Education Program for African Students:

  • Applicants must be a national of a Sub-Saharan African country.
  • Applicants must have an MA or Ph.D. degree, preferably in Economics, education policy, social/public policy, development studies, or international development, with a strong focus on education.
  • While a Ph.D. is not mandatory, GEAI encourages fresh Ph.D. graduates who can benefit from mentorship and additional training to become solid researchers.
  • Applicants must be proficient in quantitative data analysis, with a strong knowledge of data analysis software such as R and Stata.
  • Applicants must not be older than 35 years old at the time of application.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an interest in education policy research and analysis.
  • Applicants must have an affiliation at a research or higher education institution in a Sub-Saharan African country and intend to do so for the foreseeable future.
  • Applicants who are qualified females will be given priority.

Required Documents:

GEAI and PEP are jointly managing the Africa Fellows Program application process. Applicants will be evaluated based on criteria such as prior preparation and the quality of their essays. Those interested in the program must submit an expression of interest that includes the following:

  • A two-page statement of interest
  • A two-page essay. In this essay, the applicant must think and write about a specific education problem in their home country and how such a problem could be scientifically evaluated using quantitative methods. The essay must be prepared in English;
  • A detailed and updated CV with at least two (2) referees whom the selection committee can contact.

Method of Application for the PEP/GEAI Africa Fellows 2023 in Education Program for African Students:

Interested applicants are required to follow the steps below to submit their complete application.

  1. Register on the PEP website and fill out all required information. Your profile will be activated within 24 hours. Kindly note that your username is the email address that you use to register.
  2. Access your PEP account. Once your profile has been activated, you can access your PEP account by clicking on the Login button.
  3. Complete your profile. Click on your name (top right corner of your PEP account page).
  4. Go to the menu under “My workspace” (top left corner) and click on “Submit a proposal”.

Once finished, to make sure that the submission was successful, return to your PEP account and click on “My Projects” (under “My workspace). Select the project and go to “Documents” to find or replace/update your document.
