Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers

The Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers is a three days program for African researchers within the framework of its three core research themes which are actors of violence and the changing nature of conflict, the effects of megatrends on democratization and autocratisation, and global power shifts and multipolarity.

The Megatrends Afrika project is offering three fellowship opportunities to African researchers to explore its three core research themes: actors of violence and the changing nature of conflict, the effects of megatrends on democratization and autocratisation, and global power shifts and multipolarity. These fellowships will run for up to three months between 15 May and 30 November 2023, with a full-time commitment at one of the institutes in Berlin, Bonn, or Kiel. Successful candidates will be responsible for carrying out their own research project, and potentially collaborating with project team members and colleagues, as well as producing at least one publication for the project’s series.

Description of the Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers:

  • Fellows are required to work on their own research project or, if appropriate, with other project team members or colleagues from SWP, IDOS, and IfW. They need to produce at least one paper to be included in the project’s publication series. Additionally, they need to engage in project meetings, events, and other applicable activities of their host institution.
  • The Megatrends Afrika team operates in English and accepts publications in English, French, and German.

Requirements for the Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers:

  • Applicants must have a Ph.D. in politics, economics, social sciences, geography, international relations, or other relevant regional sciences.
  • Applicants must be originally from an African country.
  • Applicants must have a history of scholarly work and experience in areas pertinent to the MTA project.
  • Applicants must have experience in scientific policy advice is an advantage.

Research Topics for the Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers:

  • What are the implications of multiple challenges (such as security issues, changes in political regimes, food insecurity, and climate change) for social cohesion, resilience, and gender dynamics in the Sahel or Lake Chad Basin?
  • The implications of remote warfare, hybrid warfare, and other changes to the nature of armed conflict and intervention on state legitimacy have been a subject of considerable study.
  • How do demographic changes affect the political attitudes and participation of young women?
  • The influence of digital technologies on African politics, societies, and economies, such as political power, the spread of false information, mobile money services, and investments, has had a significant impact.
  • Africa’s Involvement in International Discussions and Adaptations Concerning Climate Change.
  • How African nations and international actors are influencing the energy shift in Africa.

Benefits of the Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers:

Fellowships will be given for a total of three (3) months between May 15th and November 30th, 2023, full-time. During this time, fellows must stay in the city of the associated institute, meaning either Berlin, Bonn, or Kiel. They will be provided with a monthly grant of €2,800 and an economy fare return trip from their current home to Germany. At IDOS, the honorarium will be determined according to the IDOS fee chart.

Method of Application for the Megatrends Afrika Fellowships 2023 for African Researchers:

Please submit your application to Megatrends-Afrika@swp-berlin.org before the deadline. Incomplete applications and those received after the deadline will not be considered.

  • Applicants must submit a single PDF document which should include a one-page letter of motivation, an academic CV (including a list of published works, with two samples of recent publications), copies of relevant academic transcripts and/or diplomas (no translations required) and a concept note describing the proposed project.
  • The concept note should not exceed 2,000 words and include an exploration of the project/research topic, relevant goals, and the academic and policy implications of the project. Additionally, the concept should describe the theoretical and methodological approaches the fellow intends to use.
  • The project should be planned such that the publication will be completed by the end of the fellowship.
