The Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards 2023 formerly known as the Harry Frank Guggenheim Young African Scholars aims to celebrate the accomplishments of prominent African scholars who are exploring topics related to violence in Africa. The award funded by the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation is for Ph.D. students.

Every two years, the Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation identifies a group of approximately twelve scholars for their high-quality, violence-related projects and awards them with African Fellowships. The Foundation encourages applications from any of the social and natural sciences or related disciplines that can help to better comprehend the sources, manifestations, and prevention of violence and aggression. Priority is placed on research that can promote knowledge and improve current issues involving violence and aggression in the modern world. The proposed project must be connected to the African continent. Kindly be aware that the Foundation is interested in exploring the issues of violence in relation to a variety of topics, including, but not limited to, the following below:

  • War
  • Crime
  • Terrorism
  • Family and intimate partner relationships
  • Climate instability and natural resource competition
  • Racial, ethnic, and religious conflict
  • Political extremism and nationalism

Eligibility for the Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards 2023:

  • Applicants may be citizens of any country.
  • Applicants must not be more than 40 years of age at the time of application.
  • Applicants must currently enroll in an accredited Ph.D. program at an African higher education institution, and live on the continent.

Benefits of the Harry Frank Guggenheim African Fellow Awards 2023:

The African Fellow Awards offer a variety of benefits, including an in-person methods workshop in Africa, $10,000 research grants, mentorship from experienced African and Africanist academics, sponsorship to present research results at an international conference and help with writing and publishing via a workshop designed to aid scholars in writing for and submitting to international, peer-reviewed journals and other outlets.
