Mawazo Fellowship Programme 2023 for African Women
The Mawazo Fellowship Programme 2023 for African Women is funded by Mawazo Institute to offer suitably qualified African women a chance t pursue their Ph.D. studies in any field at accredited universities across Africa. This fellowship program intends to create a group of African female experts who can influence policy, and discourse in academia, and beyond with evidence–based solutions that will support the advancement of the African continent.
The Mawazo Fellowship Programme is a 15 months, online course where Fellows take part in a virtual training program provided by the Mawazo Institute. This program is conducted on the Mawazo Learning Exchange (MLEx) e–learning platform and includes professional development courses. The fellowship program aims to support 40 women who are working in the following thematic areas below:
- Agriculture and Food Security
- Business, Trade, and the Economy
- Climate Change, Natural Resources, and the Environment
- Education and Pedagogy
- Energy and Engineering
- Gender, Rights, and Governance
- Information and Technology
- Life and Health Sciences
- Mathematical and Physical Sciences
This program offers African female students from different countries a Ph.D. scholarship which gives them the opportunity to gain virtual, on–demand instruction, mentorship, and access to funds for research initiatives, conference travel, research interpretation, and cross–sector collaborations related to emerging development issues.

Eligibility for the Mawazo Fellowship Programme 2023 for African Women:
- Applicants must be a woman.
- Applicants must be a citizen of an African country.
- Applicants must have a good command of written and spoken English.
- Applicants must be enrolled for their Ph.D. at an accredited university in Africa.
- Applicants must have completed their coursework.
- Applicants must demonstrate that their Ph.D. research is related to African development and is relevant to a global, regional, national, or subnational policy priority.
- Applicants must demonstrate that they have a “Big Idea” to transform Africa through their research.
- Applicants must demonstrate potential for leadership both within and outside academia, and a strong passion to leverage their expertise for impact in society.
- Applicants must be available to fully participate in the program.
Method of Application for the Mawazo Fellowship Programme 2023 for African Women:
Interested applicants are required to download the application guidelines and the FAQs document for additional information with regards to the program and the application process before proceeding to fill in and submit their applications via the online application portal. Applicants are to submit the following documents below.
- A completed online application form
- A current 2-page CV
- A letter confirming current enrolment in an accredited Ph.D. program
- A letter confirming that you have completed your course work and passed your departmental defence
- A recommendation letter from your PhD supervisor
- A recommendation letter from a second referee
