The The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis often shortened as IIASA are pleased to invite as well as welcome applications from highly intelligent international students who wish to further their project work in Austria to take a chance on their ongoing YSSP Young Scientists Summer Program for the 2023 session.

The scholarship program often hosts about 50 doctoral students from around the world annually from 1 June to 31 August and PhD students have been advised to submit their application on or before the deadline. . Interested applicants for the Young Scientists Summer Program are encouraged to take advantage of the program to develop their research and interpersonal skills.

The program is designed for Ph.D. students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their Ph.D.) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA and a wish to explore the policy implications of their work. Participants will be working under the direct mentorship of an experienced IIASA scientist in a unique interdisciplinary and international research environment. They will produce a paper (serving as the first step towards a publishable journal article) and will get the opportunity to build up contacts for future collaboration within the institute’s worldwide network.

The International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) is an international research institute that advances systems analysis and applies its research methods to identify policy solutions to reduce human footprints, enhance the resilience of natural and socioeconomic systems, and help achieve the sustainable development goals.

The awards are given annually for outstanding work by participants in the institute’s Young Scientists Summer Program. They provide financial support for the winners to return to IIASA for an additional three months of research.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for the 2023/2024 IIASA Young Scientists Summer Program (YSSP);

  • Ph.D. students (ideally about 2 years prior to receiving their Ph.D.) working on a topic compatible with ongoing research at IIASA
  • Applicants from all countries are welcome, although IIASA gives priority to citizens or residents of National Member Organizations (NMO) countries.
  • Participation in the YSSP is only possible for one summer (however, you may apply several times) and you will need to be present at the institute (i.e. no fieldwork or working remotely) for the full duration of the program.
