French Agency for Development (AFD) Digital Challenge 2023

Suitably qualified African startups are invited to apply for the French Agency for Development (AFD) Digital Challenge 2023 worth up to €150K prize. The aim of the challenge is to identify African start-up projects, promote them and accelerate their development for the benefit and growth of young talent within the African continent.

For the sixth year in a row, AFD Group is increasing its support for African startups and digital players. The Digital Challenge, which was established in 2016, seeks to identify, publicize, and accelerate projects built on digital technology for Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI). Beyond their potential for economic growth, these industries have a pivotal role in enhancing social cohesion, cultural appreciation, and citizen emancipation. This year‘s edition of the AFD Digital Challenge is focused on Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI).

Eligibility for the French Agency for Development (AFD) Digital Challenge 2023:

  • Applicants’ digital projects must involve one of the six main sectors of activity of the Cultural and Creative Industries.
  • The applicant’s project must offer a digital solution to one of the following three challenges.
  • Applicants’ projects must Enhance the value of African cultural heritage and legacies
  • Applicants’ projects must promotion of inclusive access to cultural and creative content.
  • Applicant’s project must currently be in the seed phase (prototyping or beginning of commercialization with an indicative annual turnover of 0 to 18 000€) or in the acceleration phase (economic model and user market established with an indicative annual turnover of 18 000 to 250 000€/year
  • Applicants’ projects must have a legal structure based in one or more African countries.
  • Applicants’ projects must have a sustainable and autonomous economic model.
  • Applicant digital technology must be at the heart of their solution.

Method of Application for the French Agency for Development (AFD) Digital Challenge 2023:

Interested applicants are required to submit their application using an electronic application form which consists of two parts:

  • An administrative section, covering the administrative and legal nature of the Participant (company name, date of creation, governance, etc.).
  • A project section, focusing on the qualitative aspects of the entrepreneurial project put forward by the Participant in the framework of the Challenge (business purpose, turnover, description of the service/product, etc.).
