United Nations World Oceans Day Photo Competition 2023

Application submissions for the United Nations World Oceans Day Photo Competition 2023 are currently ongoing. The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed June 8th as “World Oceans Day” starting in 2009, acknowledging the vital role oceans play in sustaining life on Earth. Oceans not only provide food but also regulate the climate and are a crucial component of the biosphere.

World Oceans Day urges individuals to take action to preserve our oceans for the benefit of present and future generations, both in their personal lives and in their communities. Despite the immense challenges posed by issues such as plastic pollution, overfishing, and climate change, collective efforts can lead to a healthier ocean that supports billions of humans, plants, and animals that rely on it daily.

The Contest for the United Nations World Oceans Day Photo Competition 2023:

The art of photography has the ability to express emotions and ideas with great impact. An open and unrestricted photography contest has been launched with the aim of inspiring the creation of images that showcase the ocean’s beauty, challenges, and significance in relation to humanity. The hope is that these images will encourage efforts to conserve this crucial resource.

There are six thematic categories available for submissions in the photo competition:

  1. No Time to Waste. The ocean is under immense pressure from both human activities and natural causes, necessitating immediate stakeholder action. This category of the photo competition seeks images depicting the impact of ocean stressors, such as uncontrollable algal blooms, red tides, and abandoned fishing gear, as well as images showcasing solutions being implemented to mitigate these issues. Submissions for this category must include a set of three images.
  2. Putting the Ocean First. This category of the photo competition centers around exploration, discoveries, and initiatives focused on preserving the ocean’s health in both the present and the future. Submissions should showcase innovative and sustainable solutions, as well as any discoveries related to ocean conservation.
  3. The Wonderful World of Tides. This category of the photo competition is dedicated to images that showcase the beauty of tides and the adaptability of nature to changing environments, as demonstrated by the daily (or sometimes multiple daily) rise and fall of tides. Submissions can feature tides from both above and below the water’s surface and can be captured using macro or wide-angle techniques.
  4. Ocean Is Life. This category aims to capture the ocean’s vital role in sustaining life on Earth, from seagrass producing oxygen to sustainable fisheries providing food. It includes images that showcase the known, the unknown, and the often-overlooked aspects of this connection. Essentially, any image that depicts how the ocean is a lifeline for all living beings on Earth is eligible for submission.
  5. Big and Small Underwater Faces. This category focuses on portraits of marine life underwater, showcasing faces that are both big and small in order to bring a personal touch to the world beneath the waves.
  6. Underwater Seascapes. The breathtaking beauty of the ocean’s wonders can be seen in the stunning underwater seascapes, which showcase not only the diversity of marine life but also the intricate ecosystems and interactions that are often hidden from view. To qualify, at least half of the images should be taken underwater, with the remaining half comprising both above and below-water shots. These photographs are meant to evoke feelings of admiration, hope, and possibility.
