UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 for Cultural Heritage Conservation

The UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 for Cultural Heritage Conservation acknowledge outstanding initiatives by individuals and organizations to preserve or restore structures, locations, and properties that hold significant cultural heritage value within the region. The awards aim to motivate property owners to undertake conservation projects within their communities, either through independent efforts or public-private partnerships.

Since its inception in 2000, the Awards program has acknowledged 278 projects from 27 countries across the Asia-Pacific region. These projects are recognized for their comprehensive understanding of their respective sites, exceptional technical accomplishments, and ability to demonstrate social, economic, and environmental impacts at various levels. Through recognizing these achievements, the program has played a significant role in fostering a regional dialogue about cultural heritage, its significance, and the stakeholders involved in its conservation. Furthermore, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation program has helped to establish the connection between cultural heritage and the sustainable well-being of cities, societies, and the environment.

Benefits of the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 for Cultural Heritage Conservation:

In November 2023, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards 2023 for Cultural Heritage Conservation will announce the winners who will be recognized based on their level of achievement. These levels include Award of Excellence, Award of Distinction, Award of Merit, Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts, and Special Recognition for Sustainable Development.

  • The highest recognition in the Awards program is the Award of Excellence, which is bestowed upon projects that exhibit outstanding achievement in all criteria and have a significant catalytic impact at the national or regional level.
  • The Award of Distinction is bestowed upon projects that exhibit exceptional accomplishments in all evaluation criteria and have a considerable influence on the national or regional level.
  • A project that shows exceptional performance in all criteria is recognized with the Award of Merit.
  • The Award for New Design in Heritage Contexts is conferred to recently constructed projects that exhibit exceptional design and are well-incorporated with historical contexts. The competition invites entries of newly completed architecture and designs that enhance an existing heritage environment. It includes building annexes, new extensions, new buildings, new public spaces, and new structures like bridges.
