International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program 2027

Suitably qualified PhD economists globally are invited to apply for the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program 2027 which offers you a well-rounded experience of the IMF’s work and a strong foundation for a long-term career as an economist.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) Economist Program 2027 is a three-year rotational program for PhD economists. Through this program, you will gain hands-on experience across the IMF’s work from country missions to policy research. From day one, you will apply your research and analytical skills to real-world challenges that shape the global economy and impact IMF 191 member countries.

Recent PhD candidates (or within one year of completion) in macroeconomics or related area will rotate across departments, contributing to country surveillance, policy analysis, and research on issues such as fiscal, monetary, financial, and external sector issues.

As an Economist Programmer (EP), you will contribute across these IMF’s core work:

  1. Country work: Work on IMF Article IV consultations and country programs—analyzing economic development and advising member countries.
  2. Policy advice: Contribute to IMF advice on fiscal, monetary, financial, debt, and external sector issues.
  3. Research: Contribute to research and analytical work that informs flagship publications and policy decisions.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a recent PhD graduate or be within one year of completing a PhD in economics or a related field.
  • Be a national of one of the IMF member countries.
  • Be under 34 years of age when joining the Economist Program.
  • Possess strong quantitative, research and analytical skills.
  • Be fluent in English; knowledge of additional IMF languages is an advantage.
  • Demonstrate the ability to apply economic thinking to real-world policy challenges.

Note: Applicants do not necessarily need to specialise in macroeconomics. Candidates may come from related areas such as finance, labour economics, development economics and other economic fields, although a grounding in macroeconomics and understanding of the IMF’s work are expected.

Required Documents

  • An updated CV/résumé and information required in the online application.
  • Most recent PhD programme transcript.
  • A research paper, preferably of publishable quality, or one or two chapters of the applicant’s dissertation.
  • Three academic references.

Note: The research paper, transcript and references are generally requested after the preliminary interview and do not necessarily need to be submitted with the initial application.

References should primarily be academic, although references from relevant work experience may also be accepted. Current IMF staff members cannot serve as references.
