SOAS University of London in collaboration with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation are pleased to invite highly intellectual Africans who wish to study in the UK to take a chance on their ongoing GDAI PhD Scholarship programme for the 2023 academic session.

The scholarship program is a fully funded one aimed at luring students with solid academic background for research purposes, this making it one of the toughest PhD scholarship program in Africa. It’s funded by Mo Ibrahim Foundation which have been one of the best NGOs when it comes to providing study opportunities for African students, and focuses on supporting African PhD students with projects designed to understand public sector governance capabilities, political settlements, state business relations, the governance of state owned enterprises, the governance of development policy design and implementation, and so on.

Development in Africa Initiative (GDAI) have been a movement invoke for about a decade now and often regarded as the biggest African program sponsors when it comes to studying overseas especially in the Britain.

Requirements and eligibility criteria for the 2023 Mo Ibrahim Foundation GDAI PhD Scholarship;

  • Must first secure an unconditional offer for the PhD at SOAS University of London in eligible departments.
  • Must have obtained relevant bachelor and master’s degree from a recognized institution of higher learning.
  • Demonstrate excellent educational and leadership abilities.

The eligible PhD are only those within the following departments:

  • Development Studies
  • Law
  • Economics
  • International Relations/Politics
  • CISD (Centre for International Studies and Diplomacy)
  • DEFIMS (Department for Financial and Management Studies )
  • Distance Learning: CEFIMS(Centre for Financial and Management Studies), DEFIMS

Application Process for the Mo Ibrahim Foundation GDAI PhD Scholarship 2023 (How To Apply);

Interested applicants who meets the above requirements are eligibility criteria are expected to complete their application on or before the deadline using the Online Application Form. Also ensure to provide the below documents;

  • a copy of the unconditional offer received from SOAS admissions office
  • CV (please include your email address)
  • 2 pages max statement outlining knowledge and interest in governance-related issues
  • Your research proposal (as sent to the SOAS Admissions Office)
  • one academic reference (to be sent directly by referee to ab17@soas.ac.uk)

Once the place is secured, the applicants can apply for the scholarship. Candidates will be assessed on academic merit by a panel consisting of SOAS academic members. The assessment of your application will be based on the information in your scholarship application

Please note that CAS reserves the right not to award scholarships and will only award them where there are applicants judged to meet sufficiently high academic standards and with demonstrable interests in fields relevant to the objectives of the GDAI.
