Artificial Intelligence for Development in Africa AI4D 2025 Africa Scholarship
Interested applicants passionate about Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) are invited to apply for the 2025 AI4D Africa Scholarship Program. The scholarship presents significant financial support of up to $41,500 including everything needed from tuition to research expenses and travel to the African Centre for Technology Studies (ACTS).
Through the AI4D Africa Scholarship system, PhD students alongside early professional academics engage in AI and ML research. Research focusing on Sustainable Development Goal-related topics needs to study responsible AI practices intensively.
The International Development Research Centre (IDRC) together with the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) established ACTS to advance sub-Saharan Africa’s development of artificial intelligence and technology. Through its assistance, the AI4D scholarship defines African AI research paths while providing strategic support to female and young scientists who produce technological advancement across the continent. The scholarship reshapes a wide range of recipients by providing them with essential opportunities to support foundational research that will produce a long-term impact on Africa’s growth and stability.

Eligibility for the Artificial Intelligence for Development in Africa AI4D 2025 Africa Scholarship
- Must be a registered PhD student in AI or its derivatives (machine learning, expert systems, natural language processing, intelligent robotics, etc.).
- Must have completed coursework and research proposals.
- Must have held a PhD in AI and ML for the last 3-5 years at the time of application.
- Must be under the supervision of a faculty member.
- Must attach a letter of support from their supervisor and a copy of their PhD study admission letter.
- Must have strong academic credentials and demonstrate commitment to an academic career.
- Must know the language of instruction (French or Portuguese).
- Must be a national or permanent resident of an eligible sub-Saharan country.
Scholarship Benefits:
- Tuition fees for two years: up to $4,000.
- Research activities: up to $24,000.
- Category 3 – Early Career Academics (ECA)
- Research costs: up to $25,000.
- Research infrastructure: up to $10,000.
- Travel costs: up to $2,500.
- Tuition fees for 2 MSc students (2 years): up to $4,000 ($2,000 per student).
